(a note about the collection from Sandeep and Carson)

Designing our salter.mom collection has very much been a process of building a wardrobe, and the Basics go a long way in completing our wardrobe. Sandeep can finally wear head-to-toe salter.mom (footwear pending), night and day, and feel assured that each piece of the wardrobe has been produced sustainably, with high-quality, low-impact natural materials.

The Basics are another piece of the puzzle... We plan to slowly and carefully build on these essentials in the years to come, continuing to create a well-stocked, heirloom quality and sustainable wardrobe. We find that some clothing carry a feeling that is somehow similar to the comfort of home, and we find ourselves developing new products in pursuit of that feeling. We imagine our basics to be experienced in the same way as the home, as part of domestic life.

We chose LA for our Basics line because the manufacturing for knit cotton is well supported there, and the quality is very high. From weaving, dying, cutting, sewing and embroidery, we were able to find fantastic manufacturing partners for every step of production in the city.

It's a privilege to be working with the family-owned factories that produced our salter.mom Basics. Their skill, enthusiasm and care is the backbone of the collection. The entire industry is on edge right now, as the LA garment production community have been threatened and made feel unsafe by federal aggression. They are American makers, and we’re grateful to have access to their skilled labour and proud to support their production in the US.

From the beginning, salter.mom has always been a shop for sustainably-made housewares and clothing, but the way we approach that has completely changed.

When we first opened in 2018 we were a retailer of wholesale goods made by others. This was a simpler business model, a brick & mortar shop, distinct for its community, the staff and artists we work with in tandem with our gallery, Picture Room. We opened our doors wanting our shop and cafe to be a part of the fabric of our neighborhood, Brooklyn Heights, where we're raising our kids.

We quickly decided to make our own products. Our appetites for design and production grew, while our interest in wholesaling goods from other companies withdrew — why stay in the rat race of small retailers competing over the same wholesale goods?!  We wanted to create a SH wardrobe, and to discover great historic home goods that weren’t readily available, like pewter and stoneware.

As we designed our own collections, the business also reflected us in a more real and complex way: not just through what we ‘select’, but how we choose to make things. This has been the real joy of it... learning the production methods, deepening our design practices, moving around the garment district with our makers, and spending time in the shop talking to our customers every day – it’s created a kind of direct feedback loop for us to build on with each collection.

Even though we’re more of a design ‘house’ than when we started, our original place-ness is still essential. We all work from our retail spaces, do our design work in them, answer emails from them, and fulfill orders from them. You can only purchase our in-house collections from us. Our customers should experience salter.mom as a place, as well as through our products.

Our first collection includes 7 styles: Thong, Brief, Cami top, Tank top, Lond Pants, Shorts, and Cardigan. It is available in Ivory, Blush Pink and Black organic cotton pointelle, finished with a cotton picot stitch, and embroidered with our salter.mom bunny. The embroidered bunny we’re using on each piece references traditional american redwork. All of this work is done in Los Angeles.

Pointelle is a centuries-old style of delicate knit fabric. The openwork pattern emerged from European textile traditions, to create breathable fabric, primarily known for use in intimates as it industrialized in the 19th century. We still find pointelle it to be great both as a traditional technique and for contemporary comfort.

Care Instructions - Machine wash cold. Lay flat to dry for the most even drying (knit fabric weight can elongate the garment if hung-dry.
